I’m contemplating ideas for our tutor group’s opening prayer together, and looking for images, (thinking laterally from something the wonderful Maggi Dawn said about intercessions in an interview I was listening to over breakfast, and one of the Pocket Prayers for Pilgrims posted by @c_of_e this morning, and since I’m thinking about it, thought I’d share some of the pictures I travelled round on the t’interwebs, while I was thinking.

“God of special places, thin with prayers and epiphanies, meet us today and touch our lives, that we may be reminded in a world of change and anxiety that only your presence is constant, and only love is worthwhile.”

The new year, in a new place or a new school, can have many fears, doubts, expectations, all open to prayer, for ourselves and for others. Which strike you? more…

Those people that have got to know me in Cambridge, at Westcott, wouldn’t be surprised to know I’d like to run a café more…

I have a dream. When I grow up, ok, when I get rich, which sadly is an awful lot less likely, since I don’t even buy lottery tickets, I want to run a cafe. Maybe I won’t call it a cafe. I certainly won’t call it a hostel. I might just call it Home. I want a space to fill with cheap comfy settees that is warm and welcoming and serves great coffee. And great cake. And no price lists. I want to be able to open the doors to anyone. I want people to pay what they can if they can. I want families to be able to come in and not worry about how long they’re there or about the noise or about the mess. I want people to bring the papers in and take as long as they like. I want them to leave them for others to read too. Along with anything else that can be recycled to others who might need them. Because I want people with nowhere else to be to be welcome too. I want their worldly belongings to be safe while they get a shower (btw, our electricity is supposedly finally fixed). I want them to have a warm cosy space which isn’t a hostel or a soup kitchen, and isn’t only for homeless people. But I want them to get the most benefit. And I don’t want to throw them out at closing time, because there won’t be a closing time. There will be a catering-sized kitchen though, where they can cook and eat. And maybe bake more cakes for tomorrow’s cafe. And there to be lots of beds too. Where people can sleep warm and safe. And help clean and serve and run our cafe. And play with the children. Or learn to read with the children. Maybe meet someone who can help them back on their feet. Or just hold adult conversations with ‘ordinary’ people who they are so very not different from really, but so very far away from in ‘normal’ life. Oh and maybe I’d like an allotment too, to grow things to cook and eat.

Unfortunately I’d have to be very grown up. It’s a very nice dream, it’s a shame it’s one of those dreams called pipe. Maybe I should start buying lottery tickets…
